http://esl.about.com/od/conversationlessonplans/a/debate4.htm

This debate can easily be carried out between the men and women in the class, or those who believe the statement is true and those who do not. Another variation is based on the idea that having students support opinions that are not necessarily their own during debates can help improve students fluency. In this manner, students pragmatically focus on correct production skills in conversation rather than striving to "win" the argument. For more information on this approach please see the following feature: Teaching Conversational Skills: Tips and Strategies

http://esl.about.com/od/conversationlessonplans/a/debate5.htm

This debate can easily turn into a debate about what 'Free Speech' really means, and can therefore be extremely interesting to students who are living in countries where the right to 'Free Speech' is considered a fundamental right. You can choose groups based on the students' opinions. However, you can also have students support opinions that are not necessarily their own to help improve fluency. In this manner, students pragmatically focus on correct production skills in conversation rather than striving to "win" the argument. For more information on this approach please see the following feature: Teaching Conversational Skills: Tips and Strategies

This lesson plan is based on the idea that having students support opinions that are not necessarily their own during debates can help improve students fluency. Transitions and Transitional Devices

http://www.uark.edu/campus-resources/qwrtcntr/resources/handouts/transitions.htm

Transitional Devices

(from Twenty-Questions for the Writer, p. 113-4)

The word "transition" means passing over. Thus transitional guides are connectives (symbols, words, phrases; sometimes whole sentences and paragraphs) that make possible a smooth "passing over" from one idea to the next. You make transitions by referring to what you have said before, establishing cause-and-effect connections, looking ahead to what you will say, referring to the present, marking time and place, qualifying, comparing, contrasting. These and other common transitional devices appear here in categories that necessarily overlap to some extent.

Whenever possible each group of new words is introduced using pictures. To see the words associated with the picture place your mouse cursor over the picture.

Introduction
The SIL IPA Fonts are scalable outline fonts for both Macintosh and Windows systems. They contain every base character, diacritic, and suprasegmental mark currently prescribed by the International Phonetic Association. They do not include full punctuation, capitals, non-IPA, or former IPA characters. They are intended to provide as complete a solution as is possible in one font for the display and publication of phonetic text using the current IPA.

The IPA is the major as well as the oldest representative organisation for phoneticians. It was established in 1886 in Paris.

The aim of the IPA is to promote the scientific study of phonetics and the various practical applications of that science.

In furtherance of this aim, the IPA provides the academic community world-wide with a notational standard for the phonetic representation of all languages - the International Phonetic Alphabet (also IPA).

The latest version of the IPA Alphabet was published in 2005.

Reference Guide to Phonetic Symbols
As you probably know, phonetic symbols are a great help when it comes to learning to pronounce English words correctly. Any time you open a dictionary, you can find the correct pronunciation of words you don't know by looking at the phonetic pronunciation that follows the word. Unfortunately, learning the phonetic alphabet is not always the easiest thing to do.

FMM - Frequently Made Mistakes

False Friends / falsche Freunde
German-English False Cognates
With the False Cognate Glossary
The good news: German and English are closely related and have many words in common. And the bad news? German and English are closely related and have many words in common.

Any English-speaker learning German should be aware of this fact. But sometimes things are not what they seem to be. Among the many words the two languages have in common lurk the so-called "false friends." Linguistic false friends can be just as dangerous as the human variety. These treacherous words pretend to be something they aren't. They can lead to embarrassment, or if you're lucky, just laughter.

False friends, more accurately known as "false cognates," are particularly prevalent in the two Germanic languages English and German. Because the two languages are such close relatives, they have a lot of words that look and sound alike or very similar. The innocent variety includes word pairs such as: begin/beginnen, house/Haus, garden/Garten, brown/braun, father/Vater, and summer/Sommer. There are many of these genuine cognates, and any language learner should use them to advantage.

The genuine cognates can be just as helpful for a German learning English as for an American learning German. But the false ones can also be a hidden danger going both ways. (There are many German books warning of such dangers in learning English.) Whether they are called "confusing words," "false friends," "words to watch out for," or anything else, false cognates are something a language-learner must always be aware of. It's too easy to fall into the trap.

False friends - Falsche Freunde
Hier findest du Wörter, die sehr gern verwechselt werden. Deswegen bezeichnet man sie auch als False friends. In der ersten Spalte findest du das deutsche Wort, die zweite Spalte gibt euch die richtige Übersetzung an, in der dritten Spalte steht das englische Wort, mit dem man das deutsche oft verwechselt. Die letzte Spalte sagt dir die deutsche Übersetzung dieses Wortes. Sieh mal auf folgender Seite nach.

The plan for the second edition of the classic reference work The King’s English was dictated by the following considerations: (1) to pass by all rules, of whatever absolute importance, that are shown by observation to be seldom or never broken; and (2) to illustrate by living examples, with the name of a reputable authority attached to each, all blunders that observation shows to be common.

Learning English as a Second Language
Welcome, students and teachers, to the study of English as a second language. In learning how to read, write, and speak English, students are going to gain access to many jobs and other resources that would be unavailable without knowing English. Teachers of English as a second language will do the good deed of passing on life-changing knowledge to others. Our site is made to help you learn or teach the language and become fluent in English so students can take advantage of the opportunities that fluency in English will bring and teachers can gain additional tools to help them in the classroom.

Your students already know how English can be a hard language to learn, but do not give up. All you need to do is practice, practice, practice, and you too will be able to use the language with ease. Look for friends who already know English and do things with them. As you hear the language being spoken, learn how to pronounce words and this will make you more comfortable in speaking to others. Try to speak it whenever possible, even if you do not know very much English yet. Ask friends who speak English to use only English so you may practice and become more fluent.

Learning English also involves reading and writing practice, and we have many different exercises to help you become competent in these areas. We have made these exercises fun and exciting so you will not become bored practicing. Make learning English like a game you will want to practice more often. We have created games, puzzles, and other fun activities to keep you wanting to practice reading and writing the language.

Teachers, your job is to encourage students to practice as much as possible and to design lessons that will effectively teach your students the ins and outs of English. We have a multitude of resources available to help accomplish these tasks, and you are free to use them in the classroom. Your students' motivation to learn the language will hinge in large measure upon your creativity and teaching techniques. The fun projects, lesson plans, helpful worksheets, activities, quizzes and more on our site are geared to help you be the best teacher of English.

Good luck to students and teachers of English alike. May your experience with the language be joyful and may your studies be successful!
